COVIDtestUK PCR Laboratory Test (Saliva)

This PCR saliva test is designed to detect whether or not you are currently carrying the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.

The test is validated as having 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity[1]. It is CE marked and results are performed in an IS015189 UK laboratory that is approved to share information with Public Health England (PHE).

Compared to alternative COVID-19 testing solutions, such as a PCR swab test, the saliva testing kit is much more user-friendly and non-invasive for improved sample collection and increased accuracy.

You can purchase this test kit directly yourself* or by discussing accessing the test with your GP/clinician. If you are purchasing the test kit yourself for home testing, an optional 15 minute post results consultation is included in the £119 price with a registered GP.

* This test is currently not available for private individuals.

Why?Close tab

Recent studies show that a high percentage of people show no clinical symptoms of the COVID-19 virus, making testing vitally important, particularly for employees who have returned to work or cancer patients who are undergoing treatment during the coronavirus pandemic.

The COVIDtestUK PCR Laboratory Saliva Testing kit can be used for the rapid testing of employees to help employers isolate carriers from the workplace, and cancer patients before receiving treatment. In both cases, this PCR saliva test can help employers/employees and cancer patients/clinicians respectively to make informed decisions quickly during the coronavirus pandemic.

Benefits of the PCR laboratory saliva test

  • Identifies COVID-19 from early stages of infection, even in mild or asymptomatic cases
  • Easy to use, compared to the PCR swab test kits, with no specialist equipment required
  • Fast turnaround of test results in just 1-2 days from receipt of sample
  • You can screen anywhere, at a clinic or in your own home
  • Secure and easy access to results online
  • Includes free 15 minute post-test teleconsultation with registered GP (if required), if purchased directly by you
  • Assists in the control of viral transmission to your family and the wider community
  • Suitable for sample self-collection or administration by healthcare professional
How?Close tab

It’s a simple ‘spit test’ that you can do in your own home or at your GP surgery/clinic – we don’t need a blood sample; all we need is your saliva. All test kits come with an easy-to-follow guide on how to perform the test.

Do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum for 30 minutes before giving your saliva sample.

Once sample has been collected, it should be sent to the laboratory as soon as possible using the special packaging provided and following the return instructions provided (self-arranged courier service for clinicians and Royal Mail Special Delivery service for private individuals).

ResultsClose tab

Results are provided within 1-2 days of receipt of sample in the laboratory. The test will show either a positive (you have COVID-19) or negative (you don’t have COVID-19) result for COVID-19.

Anyone who tests positive for the virus should be asked to immediately self-isolate to avoid spreading the infection. Immediate action should be taken to identify those individuals they have been in contact with and ask them to self-isolate for a minimum 14 days. Further guidance is available through the NHS website.

Note that negative results do not preclude SARS-CoV-2 infection and should not be used as the sole basis for patient management decisions. Negative results must be combined with clinical observations, patient history and epidemiological information such as history of exposure to the virus (US FDA guidance).

Supporting the clinical management of immunosuppressed patients during the coronavirus pandemic

The COVIDtestUK PCR Laboratory Saliva Test is for the early detection of COVID-19 in patients with cancer or other diseases.

The CE marked test and ISO accredited laboratory is accurate from the earliest pre-symptomatic stage of infection. However, it does not show whether a patient has had the virus previously – please see our antibody test.

The saliva PCR laboratory test should be considered as a vital companion test alongside diagnostic testing for the safe clinical management of immunosuppressed patients during the coronavirus pandemic that is easier to administer compared to PCR swab testing solutions for improved sample collection and increased accuracy.

From the results, you and your patient will be able to make informed decisions about whether or not it is safe for you to continue with surgery, treatment such as chemotherapy, or medication at that time.

The test requires a saliva sample to be collected for processing at our accredited UK laboratory. With a turnaround time of the test results in 24 hours from receipt of the sample, we will provide notification of the results to the clinician or patient and provide you with access to them via a secure online portal.
